recipe for disaster? i don't think so...!

we have now received advice from the 'caterer' regarding the ingredients we need to pick up before the 'feast'! Those who know Poni will recognise that her 'attention to detail' has not waned since she left adelaide - still as precise as ever...

  • rice
  • goat meat ( grams?kilos? whole beasts?)
  • vegeta
  • red beans (cans) (catering size cans, 250g cans??)
  • coconut milk (about five cans) ( this is good poni, this i can manage)
  • chinese broccoli ( kale?)
  • filo pastry ( for samosas? will spring roll wrappers do??)
  • carrots
  • potatoes
  • peas
  • minced meat
  • onions - lots ( buy about a 10kg bag)
  • garlic ( lots)
  • coriander ( lots and fresh)
  • chicken maryland fillets
  • canned tomatoes (lots too)
  • chicken wingettes
  • 2 dozen eggs ( thank you - these quantities i understand!)
catering for 30 adults has never been so simple...apparently!

  3. This evening around 10 pm, I was on the line talking to my family in Malawi when I heard voices in the background requesting to talk to me. I was told they were some of the villagers coming from a political rally ( Malawi is due for Presidential and Parliamentary elections in May this year and political parties are out campaigning) The people were so excited for the coincidence just like me. Mind you, they are already aware of the Chimwemwe Footprints Project and had found this as an opportunity to say something to their Aussie Friends.

The spokesperson was Ms Hilda, a mother of three. Whilst speaking, Ms Hilda was frequently being interrupted by a flood of more contributions from other members. In a nutshell,I quote what people in Makuluni village are saying to you all, listen to them:

' We send our warm greeting to you our friends in Australia (she had difficulties pronouncing Australia and I was laughing my lungs out). We the people of Makuluni are very proud to have one of our own being in your country for further studies...... We feel honored that the name of our village is on the map. Honestly, we never thought that 'Azungu' (Whites) from afar could think of us..... The gift of shoes is very welcome for we have sore feet everyday walking bare in this rough mountainous land... We really thank you for the gift, we will be here waiting till they are on our feet.....!'

'Apparently, we, in the richness of our love for one another here in the village, do send this unified love to you our friends in Australia tied in the spirit of friendship. We thank you all for your thoughts about us,you have made us proud. Our school-going children are talking about Australia, they have seen the country on the map. Do you have soil on your ground like here at Makuluni or is all your ground covered with concrete? Do you know that you are very lucky to be where you are? Some of us are really struggling to live.........'

Hilda went on to the point that I had to recharge my credit. A lot was said and I am sorry I cannot write everything but all in all, the concept is embedded in the quoted message. As the group continued walking to their respective homes, I could hear them singing political songs saying 'We have the right to vote and this is our time......' I was keenly listening to the song when my mother interrupted by asking me which date in July will I be landing in Malawi. OMG!

    Virginia.

  4. The pint-sized supervisors are coming in all shapes. Besides the one watching the offloading of shoes, another one, the said small creature is ensuring that all shoes are packed very well in the shade. Surely, she better be careful otherwise she could be packed up for Malawi, lol!
